About PRUKasih

PRUKasih is a sponsored financial protection plan to support the Government’s initiative in improving the lives of the urban low-income households (LIHs) in

Malaysia. It was birthed in 2011 as a result of a partnership between PAMB and Yayasan Generasi Gemilang (“GG”).

Through PRUKasih, eligible urban Low Income Households from participating communities are able to receive temporary financial relief when the breadwinners in their families are unable to generate income due to an accident, illness or death. Affected beneficiaries are eligible for food vouchers and housing allowances while affected families of deceased beneficiaries will be provided with funeral expenses for a maximum one year.

Ros is a single mother with 4 children, we came to know her family a bit more when we visited to process her first claim in 2016, after some sickness. We noticed that she has a differently-abled son, Adi, age 8 then, who is also un-documented. Last year, after we started our Community Center near PPR, we were able to offer creative learning classes to Adi. This May, Ros unfortunately met with a motorcycle accident and fractured her hand, hence was not able to work to support her family. She has a daughter, Seri, still studying mid-way in higher education in an Academy. Ros has exhausted her savings trying to pay her daughter’s fees. So Ros planned with Seri, to make packed foods and bring them to sell to her friends and school-mates at the Academy. Their little business took off quite well, now they are thinking of using some of the profits for their next product! This crisis has somehow prompted them to innovate other sustainable livelihood opportunities, using the PRUKasih claim money not only as relief, but also as a start-up capital, to generate more sustainable income for the whole family. The PRUKasih financial education has not only helped Ros, but has now been passed on to the next generation, her daughter, who is learning financial planning and business skills. Here we see some impact, as we partner with PRUKasih, to engage and empower families to instill hope, one step further to bring the family out of poverty.

Our first encounter with Encik A was in February 2017 and thought it was just a one-off encounter & his injury will heal quickly. Unknown to us, a series of unfortunate events has extended our journey with Encik A to almost 3 years! Encik A first sustained an injury on his right leg when he met a hit-and-run accident on his way home in October 2016. Unfortunately, his leg didn’t heal properly and had to seek repeated treatments at the hospital. In addition, his knee fractured when he fell at the hospital toilet! Since then, the tides turned for Encik S. His leg injury became worse and developed into a serious case of cellulitis due to venous insufficiency which spread to his arms and other leg. As the breadwinner of the family, he was fired from his job recently as he is no longer able to perform his duties. Now, his wife has to take on the breadwinner role and work as a cleaner to bring home only RM1000/month to support their 11-year old son. Encik A expressed that even though he had seek aids from different sources, PRUKasih is the only one that has extended help to him and is extremely grateful. PRUKasih has impacted him so much that he wants to share about how much PRUKasih has helped him to the Menteri Besar of his community. He repeatedly tell us that if not for PRUKasih, he and his family wouldn’t have survived till now.

Suffering sick with a pregnant wife is extremely stressful and can be a nightmare for anyone who experiences it. How did the wife react when she suddenly gave birth without the presence of a husband who was also in pain.... Mr. Udai Anak Atang, aged 43, is married and has two children's. His wife, who is pregnant with twins, will be giving birth in June 2019. Several times commuting to the hospital complains of abdominal pain, allowed to return home after being examined with the result that nothing was amiss. The third time he went to the hospital with a worse condition, unable to stand upright, bent over to endure the pain eventually held in the ward for a thorough examination. It turns out that this decision gave the answer to a thousand questions that come to mind. The pain was caused by a perforated sigmoid colon that did not allow Mr. Udai to carry out his activities and work normally. Mr. Udai underwent a surgery in March 2019 and had to use a colostomy bag for temporary period until his colon recover to normal. During this time, Mr. Udai was unable to work and his employer gave him a few months' leave to rest. His concerns about monthly expenses as well as his pregnant wife were reported to the PRUKasih Volunteer who visited them to help him make a claim. After being explained of the benefits of PRUKasih, Mr. Udai breathed a sigh of relief as at least PRUKasih was able to help ease his burden especially to buy basic needs items for the period he was not able to work. Mr. Udai is back to work in June 2019 and on June 27, 2019, his wife has delivered a twin daughter safely. To this day, Mr. Udai and his wife are very thankful to PRUKasih that make their life more protected. He added, through a PRUKasih free protection plan, it also helps low-income people feel more secure for themselves and their families especially in the face of unforeseen illness and accidents. As members of the PRUKasih, they are very hopeful that this PRUKasih will continue in the coming year.
